Before: The curved frames going in between the columns. After: Finished, with the upholstery in and the lights on.

The brief

A run of curved, upholstered booths with lit oak panelling, fitted between the columns of a period hall.

The tricky part

Nothing in a period building is quite straight, and a curve makes every error obvious. Each booth had to follow its curve exactly and still meet columns that weren’t perfectly plumb.

How I solved it

I set out each curve on the floor first, fixed the frames to that line, then fitted the oak panelling and scribed it to the columns wherever the two meet.

The result

Curves that run true from one end to the other and meet every column cleanly — booths that look as if the hall was built round them.
