Before: The template, traced round the carved capital. After: The oak header, cut to the same line. Drag the handle to compare.

The brief

Oak header panels to run between a row of period columns, meeting each carved capital cleanly.

The tricky part

The capitals are carved, so no two are quite the same — and none of them is a shape you can measure with a tape. Any gap between the oak and the carving would show from across the room.

How I solved it

I made a full-size template for each capital, tracing the profile straight off the carving. Then I transferred the line to the oak and cut it by hand with a coping saw, offering each panel up and easing it until it sat tight.

The result

Oak headers that wrap round the carving with no visible gap. Lower down, I used the same method where the panelling meets the column bases.
